TheMC-631monoclonalantibodyreactswithstage-specificembryonicantigen-3(SSEA-3),acarbohydrateepitopeonthemajorgangliosidethatisexpresseduponthesurfaceofhumanembryonalcarcinoma(EC)cells,embryonicgerm(EG)cells,andembryonicstem(ES)cells.TheexpressionofSSEA-3onhumanEScellsisdown-regulatedupondifferentiation.Inmouse,SSEA-3isexpressedonunfertilizedeggsandpreimplantationtoearlycleavedembryos,andnoimmunoreactivityisevidentinundifferentiatedmurineEC,ES,andEGcells.SSEA-3canbeusedtocharacterizehumanEScellsandmonitortheirdifferentiation.
